• Aim – To perform shaping and slotting on a shaper machine.
• Tools Required – A single-point cutting tool, workpiece, shaper machine.

Procedure

1. First of all, put the tool on the tool head and the workpiece on the table.
2. Then position on the tool head and the workpiece and slowly give it the depth of cut.
3. Start the machine.
4. When the ram starts reciprocating, then slowly move the tool that gives feed to the tool throughout the workpiece.
5. Increase the depth of cut when the tool has moved through the workpiece and repeat the same till the surface is plane. Hence, shaping is completed.
6. Now position the tool to the point where the slot is to be made.
7. Increase the depth of cut after each reciprocating motion of the ram till the desired slot is made.
8. Slotting is done.

Precautions

1. Never touch the tool while the ram is in motion.
2. Never stand in the path of the ram till which it reciprocates.
3. Give feed or depth of cut only when the ram is in return stroke.
