Demonstration on sweep pattern and core making in mould preparation.

A triangular piece pattern with a hings.

  • Moulding box.
  • Green sand.
  • Core sand.
  • Riser.
  • Sprue.
  • Trovel.
  • Lifter.
  • Slick.
  • Strike off bar.
  • Rammer.
  • Bellow.
  • Vent rod.
  • Swab.
  • Gate cutter.
Sweep Pattern
  1. Dress properly when working with molten metal. Wear a pair of clear goggles, leggings, and gloves.
  2. Do not make the sand too wet, as it would mix with the molten metal and reduce its quality.
  3. Ram the sand properly; if not, the mould will collapse.
  1. To prepare the mould, the sand is first filtered with a riddle and then mixed with water so that the sand becomes a little damp.
  2. The drag is put on the flat table with the pattern, or after some of the sand is rammed.
  3. Now the drag is filled completely with the green sand and rammed properly.
  4. After completely filling the drag, it is rammed, and then the extra sand is removed using the strike-off bar to make the surface flat.
  5. A layer of parting sand is spread on the surface, and the cope is placed on the top of the drag simultaneously.
  6. Now the risers and sprue pin are aligned, and then it is also rammed, and extra sand is removed using the strike-off bar.
  7. Now the sprue and riser pin are removed, and the pouring basin is made using slicks.
  8. Now the upper part is kept aside.
  9. The pattern is rotated slightly, and all the sand is removed using trovel and lifter. With the help of a swab, the edges of the pattern are smoothened.
  10. With the help of a gate cutter, the runner and gate are made, and the gating system is thus completed.
  11. Now the cope is placed again on the drag, and with the help of a vent rod, the holes are made to allow the gas to escape.
