Table No. 11.1

Six-phase power is mainly used in high-power rectifiers, traction systems, HVDC converters and industrial drives because it gives lower ripple, less harmonics and smoother DC output.

A three phase to six phase converter is obtained by using two three-phase transformers with 300 phase displacement between their secondary voltages.

A three-phase system has R, Y, B (1200 apart).

To get 6 phases, 6 equal voltages. (600 apart).

This can be achieved by connecting two three phase transformer in parallel.

Parallel operation of three-phase transformers refers to the connection of multiple transformers in parallel to meet the load requirements of a power system. This configuration provides several benefits, including increased system capacity, improved reliability, and ease of maintenance.

Conditions for parallel operations:

  1. Voltage Ratio and Turns Ratio should be same.
  2. Vector Group should be same.
  3. Polarity should be same.
  4. Impedance should be same.
  1. Place the three transformers side by side, ensuring proper ventilation and clear access for connections.
  2. Identify and verify the voltage ratings, impedance, and other parameters of each transformer for compatibility.
  3. Ensure that the transformers are de-energized and disconnected from the power source.
  4. Connect the primary windings of the transformers in parallel, ensuring proper phase connection (R-Y-B).
  5. Connect measuring instruments voltmeters to measure the primary and secondary voltages.
  6. Verify the proper functioning of the measuring instruments and ensure that they are calibrated correctly.
  7. Gradually apply power to the transformers from the three-phase power supply.
  8. Record the primary and secondary voltages as per observation table.
