Fabricate butt joint in the given sample by using gas welding.

Experiment No. : 07

To fabricate or make the butt joint in given sample by arc welding.

  1. Mild steel plate of size 100 x 50 x 50 mm, 2 pieces
  2. Welding electrode: M.S. electrode, 3.1 mm x 350 mm
  3. Welding equipment: Air-cooled transformer
  4. Voltage: 80 to 100V
  5. Current: Up to 30 Amperes
  1. Face shield,
  2. Hand gloves,
  3. Brush,
  4. Mild steel electrode & electrode holder
  5. Tongs for supplying current wire,
  6. Arc welding machine (transformer type)
  7. Bench,
  8. Chipping hammer,
  9. Rough and smooth files.
  10. Apron
  1. Firstly, check the mild steel of the workpiece and clean it properly, and also remove dust.
  2. Check the edges of the workpiece as it may have any dimensional error that can cause defects in the joint, like misalignment.
  3. The two parts are positioned on the welding table in such a way that it has a smooth and even surface.
  4. Take an electrode of proper length and fit it in the electrode holder. The tip of the electrode is suitable for welding.
  5. One edge of each piece is cut at an angle of 30° leaving ¼ in flat thickness at each end.
  6. The ground clamp is fitted to the welding table on which the workpiece is put for welding.
  7. Give suitable current and set the proper value of it.
  8. Wear an apron and face shield during striking the electrode to the welding table.
  9. The arc is struck and holding the two pieces together, first run the weld to fill the root gap.
  10. The second run of the weld is done.
  11. As soon as the arc strikes, move along slowly up, keeping 15°-25° from vertical.
  12. Do this, till the butt joint is properly welded.
  13. The alignment of the top joint is checked.
  14. The defects are removed by using a chipping hammer.
  15. Filing is done after removing extra material.
