Experiment No. : 07
Aim of the Experiment: –
To fabricate or make the butt joint in given sample by arc welding.
Materials Required: –
- Mild steel plate of size 100 x 50 x 50 mm, 2 pieces
- Welding electrode: M.S. electrode, 3.1 mm x 350 mm
- Welding equipment: Air-cooled transformer
- Voltage: 80 to 100V
- Current: Up to 30 Amperes
Tools Required: –
- Face shield,
- Hand gloves,
- Brush,
- Mild steel electrode & electrode holder
- Tongs for supplying current wire,
- Arc welding machine (transformer type)
- Bench,
- Chipping hammer,
- Rough and smooth files.
- Apron

Procedures: –
- Firstly, check the mild steel of the workpiece and clean it properly, and also remove dust.
- Check the edges of the workpiece as it may have any dimensional error that can cause defects in the joint, like misalignment.
- The two parts are positioned on the welding table in such a way that it has a smooth and even surface.
- Take an electrode of proper length and fit it in the electrode holder. The tip of the electrode is suitable for welding.
- One edge of each piece is cut at an angle of 30° leaving ¼ in flat thickness at each end.
- The ground clamp is fitted to the welding table on which the workpiece is put for welding.
- Give suitable current and set the proper value of it.
- Wear an apron and face shield during striking the electrode to the welding table.
- The arc is struck and holding the two pieces together, first run the weld to fill the root gap.
- The second run of the weld is done.
- As soon as the arc strikes, move along slowly up, keeping 15°-25° from vertical.
- Do this, till the butt joint is properly welded.
- The alignment of the top joint is checked.
- The defects are removed by using a chipping hammer.
- Filing is done after removing extra material.
Conclusion : –
