Experiment No. : 06
Aim of the Experiment: –
To make a lap joint using the two given metal sheet pieces by arc welding.
Materials Required: –
- Mild steel plate of size 100 x 50 x 50 mm, 2 pieces
- Welding electrode: M.S. electrode, 3.1 mm x 350 mm
- Welding equipment: Air-cooled transformer
- Voltage: 80 to 100V
- Current: Up to 30 Amperes
Tools and Accessories required:
- Rough and smooth files
- Protractor
- Arc welding machine (transformer type)
- Mild steel electrode & electrode holder
- Ground clamp
- Tongs
- Face shield
- Apron
- Chipping hammer
- Hand gloves,

Procedure:
- The given metal sheet pieces are thoroughly cleaned of rust.
- The two pieces are positioned on the welding table such that the two pieces overlap on over the other.
- The electrode is fitted in the electrode holder, and the welding current is set to be a proper value.
- The ground clamp is fitted to the welding table on which workpieces are kept for welding.
- Give suitable current and set the proper value.
- Wear an apron and face shield during striking the electrode on the welding table.
- Start or strike an arc by touching it, generating sparks.
- As soon as the arc is struck, move along slowly up, keeping (15°-20°) from vertical.
- Do this bit by bit so that the jobs are properly welded.
- The alignment of the top joint is checked.
- The scale (boundaries) in the workpiece is removed by using a chipping hammer.
- Filling is done after removing the defects.
Conclusion : –
To be written by student.
